The Parker J. Palmer Courage to Lead Award Announcement
Memorandum

To: Designated institutional officials, program directors, educational coordinators and all interested parties
From: Thomas J. Nasca , MD, MACP - CEO, ACGME
Re: Call for 2008-2009 - The Parker J. Palmer Courage to Lead Award Nominations
Date: April 2008

The ACGME wishes to honor and celebrate outstanding designated institutional officials (DIOs) by offering the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Lead Award . We are now seeking nominations for 2008-2009.

This award is given annually to three outstanding DIOs selected from one of three categories: a small community hospital; large community hospital; or a tertiary academic center (three awards may be given). These DIOs will have created an exemplary environment for educational programs, facilitated residents' ethical, professional, and personal development, and ensured safe and appropriate care of patients. Awarding the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Lead Award acknowledges the leadership and commitment of DIOs who foster an excellent educational environment for resident education.

On the ACGME website, you will find instructions and an application form. Three letters of support with specific information (outlined in the instructions) must accompany the form. Please know that all materials (application form, support letters, and curriculum vitae) must arrive at the ACGME by email in one batch; materials received in piecemeal will not be accepted.

All nomination materials must be received by July 2, 2008. Nominations will be reviewed and candidates selected in September 2008; the awards will be presented at the March 2009 ACGME Annual Educational Conference during the Parker J. Palmer awards ceremony for outstanding DIOs and program directors.

We request that you circulate and/or post this information for program directors, faculty, residents, educational coordinators, CEOs, and others who may wish to nominate their DIO for the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Lead Award.

Thank you for your assistance in honoring the best in graduate medical education.
